Hey
everyone today I would like to talk to you about something that I try to do
regularly when I don’t have a sound design to work on or any type of audio
work. Its this thing called Aural Stories, basically what it consists of is
creating a story that has a beginning middle and end, it can have a plot or not
but it must go from point A to point B. The kicker here is once you have your
story that you want to create you have to do it only with audio, you can use
anything to your advantage, you can use the tools that make up a sound design
which include sound effects, dialogue and room tone/environment. This helps you
keep your sound designing skills sharp and helps you find ways to move a story
along. Sometimes to make it more difficult you can not have any dialogue and
just relive on sound effects and environment sounds to guide your story along
the way.
This is a aural story which I have created, it begins with a
man sitting in his apartment watching tv and you hear the typical sounds you
would hear in a room, he then gets up and walks out the door which you can hear
the outside noise appear which is rain and then he starts up his car and drives
off you can hear the wipers going as well as the radio playing in the car, then
his phone begins to ring and he lets it ring and this happens for a while and
then he finally stops and lights a cigarette, the feeling I was going for was
that he was upset and didn’t want to talk to anyone and just went out for a
drive.
This is another one I did which involves a group of men
sitting in a bunker outside in the jungle and then a t-rex walks by and one of
the guys accidentally knocks a can down which sets off the t-rex which leads into
a huge gunfire fight which leaves the t-rex walking off and the guy breathing
heavily in relief.
This is something I know that I would enjoy working on. I find it fascinating to be able to tell a story with nothing more than audio. I enjoy just sitting back and being brought into a scene with just ambiance. I really enjoyed your first story. I specifically remember the emotion created by the phone ringing and the radio being changed rapidly; this really created a sense of anxiety within me. A huge part of me really wants to write a very short story and then try to create one of these myself. Great job!
