The man to the left of this post is a man named Ben Burtt. He is one of
the most influential sound designers in my view and im sure to a lot of other
aspiring sound designers as well. His sound design work includes working on
Star wars episode four, five and six and as well as the new films episode one
(The phantom menace), episode two(Attack of the clones) and episode three
(Revenge of the sith). Other films include WALL-E which is a personal favorite
mine for many reasons which I will explain. There are many more films that he
has worked on that you have probally seen and had not known he was the sound
designer for, look up his profile on IMDB and you’ll be surprised by the films
he worked on.
One of the films that I most admire from Ben Burtt is WALL-E. Wall-E is
a animated film about a robot who lives on the deserted planet earth by himself
and falls in love with a futuristic robot from the spaceship that the earth
people fled earth on. The reason why I love this film is because the main
character (wall-E) does not speak one word nor does his counter part Eva and
yet he is able to create these emotions using beeps and boops and other
electronic sounds that are emitted from the characters. The other reason why I
enjoyed this film as well as every other animated film is that you get nothing
for free, there isn’t any location sound that you can base your work off. There
is no room tone, no vocals or anything, every sound must be created by the
sound designer, that includes every environment sound to the artificial room
tone to effects and footsteps and everything imaginable
