Sound Designers: Part three-Walter Murch

The man in this picture is Walter Murch, most likely the most widely known sound deisgner, many books have been written using his techniques and views on sound design. Not only is he a sound designer but he also does video editing on films, one such film that I will talk about is Apocalypse now in which he did the sound design and film editing for it. I will also mention a few fun facts about the film that one might not now. As well in his line of work it includes the god father, the English patient and man more, again if you want to find out more information about him please feel free to look him up on IMDB and find all the films he has worked on.

A few of my favorite scenes in the film Apocalypse now include the flight of the Valkyries scene. In this scene helicopters are on the flight to a village to attack them, in sound world, you hear loud helicopters and the song “The ride of the Valkyries” in this point of the scene you are in the point of view of the American soldiers where you here the gun cocks and loud helicopters. Then the scene hard cuts to the Vietnam village, the sound of the helicopters are completely gone including the music. Slowly the helicopter sounds creep in in a deep low frequency way, and people start running and then the song comes back, the creeping helicopter sounds is what ties this scene together.
